General DescriptionDepartment: Allergies and Infectious Diseases;
Work Schedule/Hours: Monday-Friday/8:30a.m.-5:00p.m./ 37.5 hrs.
Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator in the Laboratory for Integrative Nano Diagnostics, the Research Specialist is responsible for independently performing routine and esoteric assays in the development of lens free imaging performed on silicon microchips. He/she will be expected to organize and present data to the faculty investigator. Additional responsibilities will include contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Follow established procedures and utilizes appropriate technique to perform experiments associated with the development and optimization of silicon microchip-based clinical assays. Includes, but not limited to:
Imaging of human cells using lens-free imaging in a microfluidic system
Measurement of contact angles, surface tension, and other properties of buffers and blood components on silicon surfaces
Measurement and imaging of viscosity of blood components
Assist in experiments transferring and optimizing bench scale assays to run on silicon microchips. Contribute to protocol development, efficiency and productivity.
Assist with publications and presentations as needed.
Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, light and/or fluorescence microscope, microplate reader, plate washer and biological safety cabinet. This person may also utilize sophisticated instrumentation such as LED-based optical and fluidic platforms, spectrophotometer, thermal cycler, flow cytometer, and laboratory automation solutions/robotics.
Responsible for operation of lab computers for data entry.
Maintain accurate data records and laboratory notebook. Maintains and makes necessary adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Along with the laboratory supervisor, works to develop and institute standard operating procedures.
