GDS is looking for an experienced maker, programmer, builder, developer, tinkerer, producer and conjurer to help build computational thinking capacities in its high school students by empowering them to build, make and create with contemporary toolsets and knowledge. The ideal candidate will savor, understand, preach and exemplify the myriad opportunities for the application of computer science across disciplines, will create these opportunities within their own classroom and will build relationships with other faculty members to extend the reach and impact of computer science throughout the school. More than being a master and proponent of one or many specific computer languages or development platforms, the Computer Science Teacher and Maker-In-Residence will cherish the concepts inherent to computer programming skills and computational thinking, and recognize their power in solving complex, real-world problems—and will be excited to create experiences in doing just that for GDS students!
The ideal candidate will:
Have the flexibility and expertise to teach both introductory and advanced programming/makers courses
Be aware of and versed in trends around maker culture for high school aged-students and constructivist communities
Embrace and foster non-conventional, collaborative approaches to teaching and learning through problem-solving
Cherish working in a diverse and inclusive community of active learners
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach 2-4 sections of applied computer science consisting of but not limited to the following courses: Making Things That Do (Intro to Programming), Tinkering and Hacking, Creative Coding (Programming for Interactive Experiences), and Visualizing Data for Social Justice (Socially-Conscious Data MAnagement & Analytics)
In partnership with the Director of Innovation & Technology, develop CS curricula for the HS division that is fun and engaging for students, and highlights the impact CS knowledge can have on the world around them
Oversee, manage, coordinate and lead activities and events in GDS’s two innovation & maker labs
Love making and building with contemporary toolsets, and be excited about sharing that love with students every school day
Develop faculty-facing curricula around computer science, technology and the maker arts for peer-to-peer instruction during the summer months
Participate in GDS’s student advisory program
Attend faculty meetings, engage in teaching and learning partnerships with colleagues, be a collegial, outgoing, creative and fun co-worker
