Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Limited 900 hours Metabolomics Research Assistant position to perform metabolomics research in support of a number of Department of Energy (DOE) projects. A primary focus will be characterizing metabolite profiles from a wide range of organisms to gain insight and create linkages between microbes within microbiomes. This is a great opportunity for developing laboratory skills, especially in mass spectrometry and data analysis, for individuals interested in research or related fields.
What You Will Do:
Sample preparation for MS analyses, including extraction and handling of a wide range of solvents and sample types (soil, microbes, media, fungi, environmental water, etc).
Run samples on the LC-MS.
Regularly utilize lab instrumentation, including a Thermo QExactive mass spectrometer, Thermo LTQXL w/ MALDI, Agilent 1290 UHPLC, lyophilizer, SpeedVac, centrifuge, and water bath sonicator.
Prepare metabolite standard solutions for LC-MS method development.
Work with robotic automation equipment.
Assist with troubleshooting extractions of various sample types.
Assist with Mass spectrometry data analysis, including metabolite identification and quantification.
Regularly run Python code as part of sample analysis.
Participate in group and team meetings.
Basic lab duties, including maintaining and purchasing consumables, lab and -80 freezer organization, requisitioning waste, etc.
Maintain lab notebook and detailed instrumentation and sample logs.
Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure the safety of one's self and others in the lab and office spaces.
What Is Required:
Minimum of 1 year of lab experience in a microbiology, metabolomics, mass spectrometry or other scientific lab with demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Experience with basic lab support/maintenance tasks.
Have the ability to be extremely detail-oriented.
Excellent communication and writing skills with troubleshooting skills.
Proficiency with basic office software (google docs, excel, etc.) .
Additional Desired Qualifications:
BS degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field preferred.
Experience with programing languages, preferably Python, is strongly desired.
Familiarity with Thermo QExactive mass spectrometer and Agilent 1290 HPLC or related instrumentation.

Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
