The position will be a part of the BiobasedChemicals and Biocontrol Research Team in Tarrytown. The team is an integralpart of BASF's White Biotechnology Research within the global BioscienceResearch platform.
The team works closely with other research teams,development teams, and business units of BASF, inside and outside the U.S. Inaddition, the team maintains and supports numerous collaborations with non-BASFpartners, including universities and other research organizations.

The Automation and Strain Development Scientist will developmetabolic engineering methods for liquid handling robots to enhance thethroughput in strain construction. The successful candidate will also beresponsible for maintaining automation equipment, running automation equipmentand related method development. The Automation and Strain Development willdevelop and analyze microbial strains for the production of biobasedchemicals. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading orcontributing to research projects. The position is a perfect fit for aself-starter who can work well on his own and as part of a multi-disciplinaryteam.
Formula for Success: You Will...
Run automation equipment like liquid handling robots (Tecan), develop and script methods on these kinds of instruments and drive the transfer of methods from manual to automated execution.
Design and engineer yeast and bacterial strains using microbiological methods, Molecular Biology, Molecular Evolution and other techniques to improve microbial metabolic pathways.
Interface and productively collaborate with members of the biological, chemical and analytical teams, with other research and development units, including external and academic partners, and business units.
Manage or contribute to a research project, including, setting the overall strategy, designing experiments, and performing administrative tasks.
Provide technical and administrative management for up to 3 technicians or bench scientists.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Ingredientsfor Success: What We Look for in You...
PhD in Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences or related discipline, OR MS in Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences or related discipline with at least 2 years related working experience OR BS in Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences or related discipline with at least 4 years related working experience.
Hands on experience and profound knowledge in Molecular Biology and Metabolic Engineering techniques for bacteria and yeast.
Experience in running state of the art biotechnology automation and high throughput equipment, especially liquid handling robots.
Experience with developing new methods for automation equipment desired.
Experience in automating manual wet lab tasks desired.
Successful development of microbial production strain desired.
