Business Development and Technical Project Manager, National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC)-2006703
The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) is recruiting a Business Development and Technical Project Manager to expand its presence in commercial and government markets. The NREC, a leader in robotics technology development and commercialization, serves as the technology transfer arm for the world-renowned Robotics Institute. The candidate will be in two related roles with varying involvement and allocated time depending on the organizational needs. These two complementary roles are described below. The individual will have two direct supervisors. The primary supervisor is NREC's Director of Business Development, who will supervise the individual for all business development activities. The secondary supervisor will be the Director of NREC, who will supervise the individual for all project management activities.
Business Development Manager Responsibilities : The candidate will be responsible for establishing new account relationships and closing new project business. This individual must rapidly identify and qualify project opportunities across broad market areas and within large commercial and government accounts. He/she will work closely with robotics researchers, engineering staff and contracts personnel to define customer needs, advocate a solution, and negotiate a contract. This individual should possess the ability to analyze market trends to proactively identify organizations that can be served with NREC technology and capabilities. He/she should be a strong contributor to NREC's marketing communication efforts. Responsibilities include:
Identify potential customers.
Use various business development tactics to access the decision makers at targeted organizations.
Present NREC's capabilities and expertise to potential customers.
Prepare and lead proposals.
Act as the capture manager for new opportunities.
Organize and attend trade shows and conferences.
Support contractual negotiation.
Lead opportunities from start to finish and close deals.
Participate in the Marketing Group and support the creation of marketing material.
Interacts with technical leadership.
Technical Project Manager Responsibilities : The individual will also serve as Technical Project Manager (TPM) on selected projects. Excellent project management is essential to the successful transition of robotics technology into the industries that NREC serves. As a Technical Project Manager, the individual is expected to deliver successful projects while creating value for our sponsors, licensing NREC and CMU technologies, and generating follow-on business. Responsibilities include:
Perform in a cross-functional structure, working with management to establish the priorities to ensure that business needs and customer expectations are being met efficiently and effectively.
Create and manage project management deliverables and work/resource plans that deliver on time with excellent quality.
Ensure development /execution of project plans that define activities, dependencies and deliverables.
Lead a project team throughout the Project Life Cycle including requirements analysis, design, prototype, build, test, deployment and transition.
Collaborate with team members in project effort analysis, issues management, risk management and quality assurance.
Manage project quality to ensure customer expectations are fulfilled through the delivery of project objectives.
Manage the project budget both internally and externally so that the project is executed within budget.
Perform change management for the project as to scope, schedule and budget.
Manage client expectations for timely review and approval of change orders.
Provide technical guidance and leadership to engineering teams to ensure that priorities and direction are aligned with the project goals.
Collaborate with key stakeholders, business managers and engineers to build consensus around architectural solutions, define high-level and detailed requirements, and deliver projects successfully.
Travel : In both roles above, we anticipate the individual to travel about 25% of the time depending on needs from business development and/or project management.

Bechelor's degree required, preferably in science or engineering
5 years or more of project management experience required
2 more more years of business development experience
